Curriculum

Please click below to see the curriculum map for Year 2, as well as half termly topic webs. These are working documents however, so they may change as we progress into the term. The Year 2 Curriculum Meeting slides are also below.

Homework sheets

Please see below for weekly homework sheets. Children should have brought these home every Friday in their homework books.

Attached is also a recommended reading list.

Our Learning

Our topics for this half term are The Magic Toymaker as well as Look and Listen.

In The Magic Toymaker we will be learning all about the world of toys and the role that they play in entertaining us, educating us, and stimulating our imagination. As historians, we will be finding out about the ways in which toys have changed over time; as scientists, we will be exploring the various materials that toys are made of; as designers, we will be learning about the different stages of the toy-making process and creating our own board games.  Toys come in many shapes and sizes, but what is it that makes a great toy?

In Look and Listen we will be considering how you can hear and how you can see as well as how you can hear talking, a plane flying overhead and see someone smiling. We will be learning about what makes hearing and seeing these possible. We will need to be scientists to find out how sound and light travels.

English

Our texts this half term for reading are: Little People Big Dreams (David Attenborough) as well as Fantastically Great Women who Changed the World.

With these books we will be understanding different people who have made an impact in our world.  We will also have a focus on writing non-chronological reports on toys from the past to link to our IPC unit as well as writing stories that involve character and setting descriptions using the skills that we have learnt throughout the year.

Maths

For this half term we have a focus on Fractions.  We will be recognising and finding 1/2, 1/4, 1/3 and 3/with both shapes and numbers.  After, we will be working on time, looing at O'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to, to help tell the time.  We will be challenging ourselves to tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes.

Supporting your child with their learning at home

Reading

Reading should be completed a minimum of 3x a week, but ideally for 10 minutes each evening. This should be completed with an adult, and children can choose to read their own book, a book from school or on bug club. Adults need to record the reading session in the reading record, alongside a sentence or two about how the read and anything they found tricky. Reading records must be in school every day.

Homework books

Homework books are sent home on a Friday and must be returned to school on a Wednesday. Weekly homework includes:

Maths

A short maths challenge linking to the week’s learning. There will be 3 different challenges that your child can choose to complete depending on how confident they felt with that concept in class. Children should also log into TTRS (https://ttrockstars.com) and practise their multiplication recall.

Spellings

Children will have 10 spellings sent home linking to a spelling pattern being taught in class. These will be tested in the spelling session on a Wednesday morning.

IPC

At the bottom of the homework will be some questions linking to the topics being taught in class. Please ask your children these questions and get them talking about all the incredible learning that is taking place in classrooms! This is a great chance for children to share all of their amazing knowledge.

PE

PE days are as follows for Summer 1:

2M - Monday

2C - Monday and Thursday

2MM - Friday

As we move into Summer, please ensure that children wear their appropriatePE kits (PE shorts or jogging bottoms, Red Hill PE top, school jumper and trainers). Please also make sure children bring a warm, waterproof coat with a hood just incase of the rain.
